I have always had a personal connection with the arts. I had been fortunate enough myself to attend Olde Providence and receive wonderful lessons and inspiration from Mrs McCann. She helped nurture my passion for art and creating. It is because of this love that I am an advocate for the joys of arts education and all the benefits it provides.
Children love the chance to express their individuality and hard-work, and art is the perfect opportunity. It fosters motivation, dedication and creative, individualistic thinking. Art provides the teaching of all things that our society holds dear. I have personally seen children, both in active participation in my own classes and observation of others, blossom with confidence and excitement when introduced for art.
Art is this wonderful manifestation of human ingenuity. It allows people to view the world in a new way. People can manipulate their surroundings into this expression of perspective and thought, whether it be visual, musical, writing, theater or dance. It teaches more than just facts, it teaches sympathy. It generates a fuller understanding of subjects, the human condition and ultimately yourself. Only when education is fun and engaging, are students learning. Creativity in schools leads to creativity in life.
I'd like to thank the students and staff of Olde Providence for allowing me to partake in this learning experience. It was an experience like no other. Thank you for showing me the fervor and zeal that your students have not only for art, but for life and their futures.
All images of student artwork were taken by me at the permission of the students. The interviews were given by twenty-eight students, but kept anonymous for the sanctity of their safety. I was fortunate to work with such fantastic faculty, staff and students.
